WHO ARE WE ? The European Centre for Eco Agro Tourism (ECEAT) was established in 1991 by several environmental, organic agriculture and nature protection organisations. ECEAT is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organisation, focused on rural development, sustainable land use, and the environment in relation to sustainable tourism. It is manifested in ECEAT's core programme, the Eco Agro Tourism initiative. ECEAT has a small full time staff that works in the head-office in Amsterdam. In addition there is a pool of volunteers that assist during the busy periods. The staff members represent a variety of academic disciplines that are directly relevant to the running of an international organisation such as ECEAT. In every country there are also national coordinators. However, to no small extent lies the strength of the ECEAT Foundation also in the generous support that is supplied in time and expertise by the members of the Supervisory board. Most of them work in fields related to the core concerns of the activities of ECEAT. The contributions to the goals of ECEAT of all of these individuals, and the organisations to which they belong, are very much appreciated. Moreover, there are also contributions in the form of subsidies and expertise which are supplied by national and supra-national governmental agencies such as the European Union. In addition there have been low-profile donations by foundations of, for example, financial institutions. There is also a growing number of private supporters -- and new "Friends of ECEAT" are of course very welcome. Combined these factors explain why, on the one hand the individual farmers have to pay only a relatively small fee to benefit from the work of ECEAT (expert advice and publication in our guides), while on the other hand the endeavours of the ECEAT Foundation have been very effective.
